Shooting At Charleston Church Prompts Large Police Response

A shooting occurred at the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday night, the Charleston Police Department confirmed.

The police are actively searching for the suspect.

The incident took place around 9 p.m., WCSC reported, and prompted a large police response. At least six ambulances were spotted at the scene.

ABC4 reports that multiple people have been shot, but fatalities are unconfirmed.

The suspect was described by authorities as a clean shaven white male, 21 years old, slender build and wearing a grey sweatshirt and blue jeans.

According to the church’s website, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church has “one of the largest and oldest black congregations south of Baltimore, Maryland.”

Earlier a young man was apprehended, but it was unconfirmed and unlikely he was in fact the shooter. People from the scene posted on social media expressing doubts of his involvement.
